Lau and Nikita

Lau has learned from Nikita how to be a lawyer, under a very generous arrangement whereby he doesn’t need to pay anything for his tuition until and unless he wins his first court case. Rather to Nikita’s’ annoyance, however, after giving up hours of his time training Lau, the pupil decides to become a musician and never takes any court cases. Nikita demands that Lau pay him for his trouble and, when the musician refuses, decides to sue him in court. Nikita reasons that if Lau loses the case, he, Nikita, will have won, in which case he will get his money back, and furthermore, that even if he loses, Lau will then have won a case, despite his protestations about being a musician now, and will therefore still have to pay up.

Lau reasons a little differently however. If I lose, he thinks, then I will have lost my first court case, in which event, the original agreement releases me from having to pay any tuition fees. And, even if he wins, Nikita will still have lost the right to enforce the contract, so he will not need to pay anything.

My view:

1. Nowhere was there a condition that Lau HAD to take a court case.

2. Lau would win his case because Nikita sued him BEFORE Lau won his first case. Nikita would lose that particular case because Lau has not yet won a case, and therefore Nikita’s cause of action had not yet manifested itself.

3. Lau now has won a case, his first one, and must now pay Nikita. This is grounds for a new trial.

But...if Lau hired a lawyer to represent him then he wouldn't be taking his first case and thus could neithe rwin nor lose that case....

Meanwhile in Germany..........................

There are about 90 combat-trained Islamists in Germany moving among underground networks, Focus magazine reported Saturday, as intelligence agencies and police prepare to overhaul the country's anti-terrorism approach.

Some 30 of them have actual fighting experience through clashes with US or Pakistani soldiers, the magazine reported, citing German security sources.

In total, 185 Islamists trained in terrorist camps in central Asia had lived or worked in Germany in the past 10 years, the sources said.

New, young radicals were no longer recruited only through mosques, but also in universities, prisons and sports clubs, the report said.

The security sources wanted Germany to take a stronger stance in the future towards deradicalising young Islamists.

According to a separate report in magazine Der Spiegel, the Joint Terrorism Defence Centre (GTAZ) – a co-operation between various German police and intelligence agencies – will hold a forum in December to overhaul the country’s anti-terrorism strategy and come up with fresh approaches.

The efforts would be aimed at native German converts to Islam, as much as radicals with immigrant backgrounds.

Until now, anti-radicalisation measures had been piecemeal across Germany’s states, ranging from educational comic books to one-on-one conversations with violence-prone Islamists, the Spiegel report said.

The forum, organised by the Interior Ministry, would also study Jihadists who had already been convicted and imprisoned, as they posed their own danger in jail, where they could radicalise other prisoners.

To fight this problem, moderate Imams and Islamic organisations could be brought into counter the influence of radicals in jails, the Spiegel report said.

So, they're looking for moderates...but what is a 'moderate'?

The problem is that "moderation" is necessarily a relative term with respect to where the supposed extremes lie, not a measure of orthodoxy or heterodoxy. Hence, "moderation" can mean one or more of three things in the current context: 1.) the brand name for the authentic Islam that we're told has been hijacked and misunderstood by a Tiny Minority of Extremists, 2.) a lack of observance for the moment that may or may not translate into a lack of belief in the draconian aspects of Islamic law, or 3.) simply not appearing to be as bad a purported misunderstander/hijacker of Islam as the next guy: For example, "moderate Taliban."

Nikita’s problem

Rather to Nikita’s’ annoyance, however, after giving up hours of his time training Lau, the pupil decides to become a musician and never takes any court cases. They can’t both be right. So who’s making the mistake?

Fix your own dental problems

Cause: Exposed nerve roots, often from receding gums

Treatment: Lay off the whitening, tartar-control, and baking-soda toothpastes—they're abrasive and can contain phosphates, which make teeth sensitive. Don't brush too hard, which can lead to other dental problems, such as recessed gums, says Sherri Worth, D.D.S., a celebrity cosmetic dentist. If pain persists, visit your dentist for a prescription fluoride treatment to toughen up your choppers.

'Bugger'

Richard the Farmer

He believed it to be the case.
He has a good relevant reason for the belief.
It was the case.

This is 'justified true belief'

But...did he really 'know' it?

For a start, Farmer Richard says that he wants to be 100% certain that Doris is in the field, but we cannot be 100% certain about anything if we allow for various unpredictable circumstances, such as his mistaking a black and white piece of paper for his cow.

Obviously, there is no purpose to a word if it refers to something that is impossible, and so there would be no purpose in having the word 'know' mean '100% certainty'.

It is like with the colour black. We originally gained the meanings of our words by referring to objects in the world which we had categorised on some easily observable basis. So, black was a category of observable characteristics.

We eventually understood this phenomenon to come about due to a lack of reflectivity of all wavelengths of light.

Then, we understood that no object reflects completely no light, and so we occasionally hear people claiming that various objects that in the vernacular we refer to as black, are not black.

This is a terrible misuse of language caused by skipping back and forth between technical and common usage, and the progression of those usages.

Back to knowledge.. The farmer has used the basis of viewing what appeared to be his cow in the field for the formation of a belief, being that his cow is in the field.

Had the cow not been in the field when the dairyman checked, and he had shown Farmer Richard the piece of paper Farmer Richard may have been a little red in the face. I contend, though, that he would probably have still felt that he had falsely known.

This, I think, is a key point. Can we allow 'false knowledge'?

If not, since we have already established that 100% certainty is impossible, then we have to disallow knowledge.

The JTB model should be fine with this, because while it might not be 'knowledge', it is still the best thing we can have.

Escaping Death

Very good!

This is because:

1. The Chief Executioner cannot execute him because the relatives could sue for wrongful execution arguing that Rob had told the truth

2. If the Chief Executioner accepted the problem and sent Rob to prison he would be sent back with the Governor lacking the authority to admit him. Thsi is because the Governor would see that Rob had lied in court again and so the punishment should have been execution after all.

Wartime Prayers

Prayers offered in times of peace are silent conversations,
Appeals for love or love's release
In private invocations
But all that is changed now,
Gone like a memory from the day before the fires.
People hungry for the voice of God
Hear lunatics and liars
Wartime prayers, wartime prayers
In every language spoken,
For every family scattered and broken.

Because you cannot walk with the holy,
If you're just a halfway decent man.
I don't pretend that I'm a mastermind
With a genius marketing plan.
I'm trying to tap into some wisdom,
Even a little drop will do.
I want to rid my heart of envy
And cleanse my soul of rage
Before I'm through.

Times are hard, it's a hard time
But everybody knows all about hard times.
The thing is, what are you gonna do?
Well, you cry and try to muscle through
Try to rearrange your stuff
But when the wounds are deep enough,
It's all that we can bear,
We wrap ourselves in prayer.

Because you cannot walk with the holy,
If you're just a halfway decent man.
I don't pretend that I'm a mastermind
With a genius marketing plan.
I'm trying to tap into some wisdom,
Even a little drop willdo.
I want to rid my heart of envy
And cleanse my soul of rage
Before I'm through.
A mother murmurs in twilight sleep
And draws her babies closer.
With hush-a-byes for sleepy eyes,
And kisses on the shoulder.
To drive away despair
she says a wartime prayer

Pre-IB Fail to do Homework

It is now 2.50 am Saturday.

The homework stated:

Plus….in your….BLOG by Saturday 21 November 2009

A Farmer – let’s call him ‘Farmer Richard from Germany’ is concerned about his prize cow, Doris. He is worried – the good times may be over.

Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei.” He thinks.

He is so concerned that when his dairyman tells him that Doris is in the field, happily grazing, he says he needs to know for certain. He doesn't want just to have a 99 per cent idea that Doris is safe, he wants to be able to say that he knows Doris is okay.

Farmer Richard (from Germany) goes out to the field and standing by the gate sees in the distance, behind some trees, a white and black shape that he recognises as his favourite cow. He goes back to the dairy and tells his friend that he knows Doris is in the field.

At this point, does Farmer Richard really know it?

The dairyman says he will check too, and goes to the field. There he finds Doris, having a nap in a hollow, behind a bush, well out of sight of the gate. He also spots a large piece of black and white paper that has got caught in a tree.

Doris is in the field, as Farmer Richard thought.

But was he right to say that he knew she was?

How many actually did the homework?

4 seconds of your time...

A few years ago a book was written -it's now published around the world in 15 languages.Joe Vitale said about it, "I've read every marketing book written since 1900. This is the first breakthrough in 50 years."

If you want to learn those 4 questions, you don't have to go buy the book. As part of a marketing test, the publisher has allowed it to be given away
and you can download it right now:

www.Simpleology.com/training/tio/

Even if you don't have time to read it right now (it's short and easy), you should download it now while you still can

Fifteen things for free!

Remember that if you make regular freebie applications online, it's a good idea to set up a separate email address just for this purpose. That way, the promotional blurb that inevitably follows won't flood your main inbox.

So – let's kick things off with...

1. Nail polish

Pick up the December edition of Glamour magazine and you'll get a free 10ml Nail Inc bottle of nail varnish, RRP £10. There are four colours to choose from. Obviously this does involve buying the £2 magazine, so it's probably only worth it if you were going to buy a mag anyway.

2. Free meal

Buy one main course and get another free at Prezzo when you register here (via the Telegraph) and print off the voucher. For this and many other good restaurant deals, check out the latest edition of Frugal Food.

3. Free book

Are you a politics buff? If so, you can currently get a free book entitled 'Ten Years On' – all about what Britain would be like without the European Union. You can register for your free copy on the Great EU Debate website.

4. Free ice skating

One person can go free when another pays full price at Bristol ice rink: Print off the voucher on the Enjoy England website. The offer even includes skate hire.

5. Free days out in Kent

There are currently loads of 2 for 1 entry offers on VisitKentByTrain. With one person paying the full price, another can bag free entry into Leeds Castle, Dickens World, The Canterbury Tales or loads of other destinations. Just bear in mind that you will have to show evidence of traveling to Kent by train!

6. Free music

Spotify is an online music streaming service that lets you listen (legally) to thousands of free tracks and albums if you put up with ads in between the tracks. We7 is a lesser known venture, but works in a similar way.

7. Free bus travel

You could currently get a week's free travel on FirstGroup buses. See if you're eligible by visiting this page of the website and answering a few questions. Remember that the free bus ticket will only be for you (you can't pass it on to a friend) and there's a maximum of one ticket per household.

8. Free tea

Nip over to the Yorkshire Tea website to register for your free sample of... yup... Yorkshire tea!

9. Free chocolate

Then zip over to the Milka UK website. Play the game to 'unlock the secret of Milka', then register to receive your free 100g bar of chocolate.

10. Free bread

To complete the run of free groceries, pop on to the Hovis website and fill in the form to get your free Soft White loaf.

11. Free blog templates

Moving on to a techy theme, blogging fanatics can now access a range of excellent free templates. Blogger users should have a look at the range at OurBlogTemplates, whilst Wordpress devotees should visit SkinPress.

12. Free Olay sample

You can currently pick up a free sample of Olay Total Effects when you register via this page of the website.

13. Free Max Factor sample

You can bag a free sample of Max Factor Second Skin foundation when you enter your details here.

14. Free three day gym pass

You can get a free three day gym pass to LA Fitness when you register on this page of their website. Just remember you're likely to be the victim of a serious sales push once you enter the building!

If you need a bit of help saving money, you've come to the right place. First, adopt this goal: Manage on a small budget Next, watch this video: How to save when you've got no money Have a look at Q&A and ask other lovemoney.com members for hints and tips about what worked best for them?

Finally, five things you can get for a penny:

Marks & Spencer is running another of its hugely popular Penny Bazaars this Friday (13th November). In the event – to mark the store's 125th birthday – 15 items will be on sale for just 1p each. You're each allowed to buy up to five 1p items, and the offer will run in all of Marks' main UK stores (though not at airports, petrol and railway stations or motorway services). Items on sale include tea towels, mugs, notebooks, socks and chocolates, amongst others. It's expected to be VERY busy, so get there early!

Attraction

Do you know how to tract the most popular and most searched about topics on the Internet? It is critical to know that because these topics will bring traffics. This article tells you exactly how.

In order to attract visitors to your articles or web pages, you need to have content that the vast Internet users are looking. What if I tell you it is possible to know what people are searching endlessly on the Internet? Yes, it is possible.

There are actually two sets of data you need to monitor which are the "trends" and "hot keywords". Hot keywords are the words which are most frequently searched on the Internet and trends is a chart that let you understand how this keyword has perform in terms of popularly over a period of time. I would believe that knowing the top and words or topics being searched would be good enough. But there are more profound function on Zeitgeist to generate the trends based on region and geograhic position. To do that, you need to go into Zeitgeist to give it a try. It is so powerful that it is able to generate the top 100 fastest-raising search queries on the Internet.

As for Google Trends, it actually can generate a chart when you key in a particular keyword to tells you how this keyword has performed over a period of time. This data is exceptionally important as it will tells you whether is this a rising trend or a declining trend. This is a very important data for you to discern what to write on the Internet if you are a writer for "get paid to write websites". When it is widely searched, people visit your web page and gives you page views which benefits you monetarily.
